India thrashed South Africa by 243 runs in the 37th match of the 2023 Cricket World Cup at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on November 5, 2023.
Virat Kohli scored a brilliant century (128) as India posted a mammoth total of 326/5 in 50 overs. Shreyas Iyer (77) and Hardik Pandya (54) also made significant contributions.
In reply, South Africa were bundled out for 83 runs in just 27 overs. Ravindra Jadeja was the star bowler for India, picking up five wickets for 28 runs.
The victory was a huge one for India, as it confirmed their place at the top of the points table. They also extended their unbeaten run in the tournament to eight matches.
Kohli’s century sets the tone
India won the toss and elected to bat first. They got off to a solid start, with Rohit Sharma and Kohli putting on 102 runs for the first wicket. Sharma was dismissed for 51, but Kohli continued to bat fluently.
He reached his century in just 85 balls and went on to score 128 before being dismissed in the 48th over. Iyer and Pandya also played well, and India finished on a strong total of 326/5.
Jadeja’s five-wicket haul
South Africa got off to a poor start in their chase, losing three wickets for just 30 runs. Jadeja then took over, picking up three wickets in quick succession to reduce South Africa to 6/6.
The Proteas never recovered from the early setback and were eventually bowled out for 83 runs in just 27 overs. Jadeja finished with figures of 5/28, while Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami picked up two wickets each.
India extend unbeaten run
The victory was India’s eighth in a row in the tournament, and it confirmed their place at the top of the points table. They are now the only team in the tournament with an unbeaten record.
South Africa, on the other hand, are struggling at the bottom of the table with just one win in eight matches. They are now virtually out of the race for the semi-finals.

Ravindra Jadeja was named the player of the match for his brilliant all-round performance. He scored 30 runs with the bat and then picked up five wickets with the ball.
India’s victory over South Africa was a dominant one. They outplayed the Proteas in all departments and deserved to win by a big margin.
